Barrie's WeatherWeather in Barrie can change without warning. Near by lies Georgian Bay, Lake Huron and Lake Simcoe which all factor in determining Barrie’s weather. In winter, the right combination of surface and upper air temperatures over Georgian Bay formulates lake effect snow over the region. Local snow squall warnings frequently develop leaving the community virtually shut down. The waters coupled with local terrain affect the intensity, duration and motion of thunder-storms. Mid-summer storms may be triggered when the cool lake breezes blow off and meet with the hotter air farther inland, placing Barrie in a high risk area for tornadoes. The Tornado that hit Barrie in May 31, 1985 was the fourth most damaging and had the longest track (200km) in Canadian History. |
